Abstract

In the field of foreign language teaching, Communicative Method (CM) is one of the most popular language teaching methods in recent years. The amount of current teaching materials in the market, written based on its philosophy, is also supporting this idea. It is assumed that CM should be also used more frequently and effectively in the contexts of teaching Turkish as a foreign language (TFL). Designing the whole language teaching procedures and curriculum depending on only one teaching method is quite a difficult issue. Probably because of this reason, in last few decades proposals of different teaching methods followed each other. In order to get more effective teaching\learning outcomes, application of CM in the contexts of TFL should be taken into consideration more profesionally and seriously. In this sense, in the contexts of teaching TFL, teachers should not only concentrate on using CM in teaching language skills, but also teaching grammar. In other words, grammar should be taught more contextually in teaching TFL environments. In this descriptive study, the reflections of foreign language teaching methods on grammar teaching within the context of teaching Turkish to foreigners are discussed. The discussions, especially, focused on teaching of Turkish language grammar to foreigners. In the conclusion part of the study, the issue of ‘What foreign language teaching method(s) should be used in teaching TFL environments, especially in grammar teaching?’ discussed, and accordingly suggestions were made.
