Abstract

From the Bahriye Nezareti translation writing to the written book of Müsevvid Kadıköylü Mehmet İhsan titled “Kavâ?id-i İmla ve Tahrir”, spelling and writing rules of Turkish of the time were listed and explained with the examples. The multitude of examples and work tasks which are given at some parts indicates that the book is based on practical teaching which is remarkable. In this book the words which are different than others by pronunciation and spelling, are identified and individually listed by Yüzbaşı Hasan and written with the correct forms according to the author. At the same time some etymological information about the words which are examined in terms of spelling is also given by the author. In addition, in the “Tahrir” part of the book writing types and the rules of them are also explained with examples. In the book, author wrote in writing expression types with the spelling rules and at some points grammar explanations are also given by the author. This is and indication that the author looks at writing skills as a whole. The book is very important for us to have an opinion in terms of to determine what can be the discussions about spelling and writing rules of Turkish at that time and how was the grammar education in this period. Latinized translation of this book and detected terms of the language grammar are the basis of our study and consists of a directory along with a statement together with identifying the skills of grammar teaching. This study has tried to determine the role of the book named “Kavâ?id-i İmla ve Tahrir” and in the grammar books of that time, and grammar teaching methods of this book have been introduced. In addition, it gives information about the life and style of “Yüzbaşı İhsan”, and the author was introduced to the world of science. The study has been prepared by the scanning method and in this direction; the study of grammar of the period was also investigated.
