Abstract

The easier it has become to reach information thanks to rapidly changing technology, the more important it has become to internalize the gathered data and interpret it. As educators of future, it is important for student teachers to assign meaning to data coming from media and behave accordingly. Therefore, this study aims to find out student teachers’ frequency of internet access, watching TV and using social media, their media literacy levels as well as the differences between them in terms of receiving media literacy course. The groups of student teachers who received education in two different departments at a state university in Turkey were involved in the study. Thus, Turkish teacher candidates who received media literacy course and English teacher candidates who did not receive such a course were included and compared in the study. Based on quantitative research methods, this study employed a questionnaire which also included Media Literacy Level Scale. Excel programme and independent samples t-test via SPSS 18 were utilized in data analysis procedures. The gathered data reveal important insights into the student teachers’ ways of following the news, their knowledge level of media literacy and their attitudes. Besides, there were statistically significant differences between the two groups of participants only in 2 items on the scale.
