OVERLAPPING LEVEL BETWEEN ACTIVITIES IN TURKISH WORKBOOKS AND ACQUISITIONS OF COMPREHENDING AND ANALYZING THE READ/LISTENED TEXT

Abstract

Comprehension skill encompasses reading and listening skills. Activities towards reading and listening texts in Turkish language courses aim to help students comprehend and analyze what they have read/listened by means of getting them achieve various acquisitions. One of the objectives of listening and reading skills is reported as comprehending and analyzing the text in the Curricula of Turkish Language Course (6th, 7th and 8th grades). Acquisitions specified under the title of this objective constitute more than half of the total acquisitions towards language skills in both reading and listening skills. This requires activities in the workbooks to give place to such acquisitions. This research aims to detect the overlapping level between activities in Turkish language workbooks and acquisitions of comprehending and analyzing the text that students have read/listened. The research is conducted through document review. Research sample includes a total of six teacher's guidebooks being two books from secondary school 6th, 7th and 8th grades. Guidebooks are preferred since they both include activities and activity instructions. Various tables and graphs are used in this research to present the number of activities including the acquisitions of comprehending and analyzing the read/listened text, distribution of these acquisitions by grades and workbooks, the most and least used acquisitions in the activities. According to the findings of the research, it was found that acquisitions of comprehending and analyzing the read/listened text are used more in the activities compared to other listening/reading acquisitions, some books do not include activities towards these acquisitions, acquisition towards finding the meanings of words or phrases in texts is the most commonly used acquisition.
