Abstract

Proverbs, reflecting the feelings and feelings of a society, play an important role in the transfer of culture and value. Teaching students the right and proper use of proverbs, ensuring that students learn about their cultures and developing their consciousness of their mother tongues, is very significant for our social values to be transmitted to future generations. One of the general aims of the Turkish Language Teaching Program is to provide students with the knowledge of Turkish culture and global culture with written and oral elements. Through this program, the cultural codes of the collective are tried to be given. However, some cultural basic elements are implicitly conveyed to the students. In this context, cultural characteristics should be structured according to interest and level at almost every stage of education and training. Proverbs and idioms have a separate prescription for cultural transmission as well as for understanding the structure of the mother tongue. In this study, the distribution of proverbs in Turkish course books and workbooks for primary and secondary schools prepared by the Ministry of National Education for use in the academic year of 2016-2017 has been examined in terms of grade level and themes. The study is descriptive and has been prepared by document review. The results of the research reveal the inadequacy of the proverbs in the Turkish course books and workbooks and the randomness of their distribution according to grade levels. Accordingly, the selection of the texts to be chosen for these books which are regarded as the main sources in the Turkish lessons should be elaborated, the texts with the appropriate features for the aims stated in the program should be selected as much as possible and the use of our proverbs and idioms which contribute to the transfer of values should be given priority.
