Abstract

Classifying text types according to their functions is important in terms of translation teaching and practice. In order to establish communicative equivalence, each text must be translated according to the tradition of the text which serves the same function in the language of translation. From this point on, this work has been carried out in order to demonstrate the importance of text types and the text tradition in development of translation consciousness and awareness. The sample of the study consists of 21 first-year students as translator candidates taking the classes Introduction to Translation and Text Analysis offered by Marmara University Translation and Interpreting (French) Department. Based on the students' background knowledge of D1 and D2, original expressive, informative and operative text types with which the students could be familiar in D3-source language were chosen, and the students were asked to translate these texts according to the text type tradition. The study covers the pre-translation, translation and post-translation process. The obtained data were evaluated by content analysis. As a result of the study, it has been observed that translator candidates have difficulty in translating cultural elements, proper nouns and place names; they have a tendency to use software dictionaries; they try to translate text types according to the text tradition; and therefore they are conscious and aware of text type and text tradition.
