CLIPPED WORDS, ABBREVIATIONS AND THEIR STRUCTURAL FEATURES

Abstract

Abbreviates are frequently used in particular areas (sport, science, art, technique etc.). Abbreviates which occur as a conclusion of developing world and changing and developing language, occur in different ways in modern languages, produced information/concepts. As a result of fast production and symbolization, they will be lexica of a language by taking a fixed form. Abbreviates which can not find enough place in vocabulary except for glossary of terms and abbreviations indexes, start to takes part in vocabularies of some modern languages as lexical entry. Depends on vitality feature of language, developments are taking place in vocabulary theory and dictionaries need to be updated. In English terminology, there are two different corresponds of Kısaltma “acronym” and “abbreviation”. In Turkish linguistics terminology, abbreviation is accepted in generally and acronym is evaluated as a subheading of this term. All of the elements belongs to these two terms, find place in abbreviation index of spelling dictionary but not in terms of lexicography. But some words have become a common word element of the language by not belonging in any fields. For example, ‘AVM –shopping center, EYP- hand made explosive, TOMA- a vehicle which steps in social situations’ such as these concepts take place in daily language with the affect of press and signboard. Although these kinds of words are both in written language and spoken language, some of these words were trapped in spelling dictionary and could only find a place in the dictionary. Whereas these words having a specific knowledge load and taking place except in organizations and institutions names are understood that they are gaining a special phonetic symbolization by moving away from the phrases that form the roots. Therefore particularly abbreviates in these kinds of examples and also clipped words consist of being clipped of different phrases, finding no places in dictionary are discussed in this study. In the course of times abbreviation forms obtained from only capital letters of phrases are come out in different forms nowadays. We understood from that today’s abbreviates and clipped words are constructionally varied. Hence, from this point, constructional analysis were set up for the examples which are obtained from both Turkish and vocabulary of some world languages like English, Russian and construction methods are pointed out in the words in question.
