Abstract

Polygamy is the practice of marrying multiple spouses at a time. The family and social environment, acquired morals, family genetics and most importantly the feelings recorded in the subconscious and the romantic feelings attributed to polygamy by men are the reasons behind polygamy but eventually it has negative effects on the man, the first wife and her children. This becomes the subject of humour which is the art of entertaining and amusing people by projecting the ridiculous, unusual and paradoxical sides of events. Turkish people express their most important issues with humour. By doing that, they try to create an environment in which these issues can be resolved. By studying the random examples of tales, lullabies, poetry, folk songs and proverbs, it can be clearly seen that polygamy is not what it is hoped to be, even for men and that it becomes a wound that needs healing. While it is rare in the Turkish tradition, polygamy occurs especially in Eastern provinces (average rate %5-%12) influenced by other cultures, specifically Arabic culture. In the studied texts it can be observed that eventually, men, the apparent culprit, are adversely affected along with the wives and children and the family unit is damaged. While it has sociological, psychological, economic, politic and religious aspects and is often ignored because it is considered a matter of religion, this issue needs to be made visible, its negative consequences needs to be eliminated and the intention to create healthy generations, families and a healthy society needs to be presented.
