Abstract

Parallelism is the succession of two or more linguistic units that are similarly constructed. It is a linguistic phenomenon which occurs at all levels of language: phonological, lexical, morphological, syntactic and semantic, so as to perform a number of rhetorical functions. The problem of this study consists in investigating parallelism in both English and Arabic through D.H Lawrence's poem 'Tease' and Nizar Qabbany's '??? ??? ???? ' to find out whether parallelism operates similarly or differently in both languages.IThis study is based on two hypotheses: First, it is hypothesized that English and Arab poets employ the same types of parallelism. Second, they may use some types of parallelism more frequently than the others. This paper consists of four sections. Section one presents an overview of parallelism. Section two is devoted to the analysis of Lawrences'Tease' ,while section three is concerned with the analysis of Qabbani's '??? ??? ????'.Finally, Section four is devoted to show the results and conclusions besides the main similarities and differences in the style of the two poets
