Fatwa word, comes from the root feta in the brave, young, strong sense and it’s solution with a strong answer to a difficult problem. The work of giving fatwa in the Ottoman Empire was performed by the shaykh al-Islam in the center and by the mufti in the provinces. This business has been seen as an important public service; by the mufti or shaykh al-Islam a difficult question of sources were searched and were being revealed. For this reason, for the mufti or the shaykh al-Islam is used hallal-ı müşkilât, ukde-güşâ like titles. The poetry fatwas in the Ottoman Empire were written by shaykh al-Islam or muftis, which has a special place among Divan poets. The Ottoman poetry fatwas, which were usually started to be given in the middle of the 16th century, have come out of the famous Ottoman sheikhulislamas such as Ebussuûd, Bostanzade Mohammed and Hoca Sadeddin. One of them is Sadi Çelebi who is well known for his poetry and for now there are only two poetry fatwas. He is the oldest Shaykh al-Islam in chronological order within the Ottoman Shaykh al-Islams, which has given verse fatwa. As the researches progresses, we hope that his number of poetry fatwas will increase.
