Abstract

In this research paper, it is aimed to compare two literary works belonging to different periods and genres. The selected works are The Romance Of Horn (a medieval romance) and Beowulf (an epic written Old English Period). Main character of The Romance Of Horn is the child of the ruler Aalof of Suddene, named as Horn. The romance tells the story of Horn, who is orphaned as a result of the Saracen’s attack against his family. The heroic journey of Horn and his twelve men is mentioned in the work. On the other hand, Beowulf is the longest surviving epic poem in English Literature, dating back to the Old English period. Beowulf is regarded as an epic work in that the primary character is a legendary hero who ventures out extraordinary separations to show his quality at unimaginable chances against extraordinary evil spirits and creatures. Beowulf tells the story of his eponymous hero. The main character, Beowulf, battles against the monster Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and finally the dragon. All his gallant deeds prove him as a real hero. And the purpose of this paper is to make a comparison of these two works especially focusing on the concepts such as loyalty, envy, battle, and revenge mentioned in the texts.
