@article{2018,title={ADAPTING THE NOVEL “YABAN” INTO FILM AS AN EXAMPLE OF INTERSEMIOTIC TRANSLATION},abstractNode={The goal of this work is to examine the film adaptation that was made by TRT (Turkish Radio Television Institution) of the novel “Yaban” (1932) by Yakup Kadri Karaosmanoglu. By examining the film adaptation of the novel, which describes the chasm between Turkish peasants and Turkish intellectuals, the question will be explored as to whether the novel and the film convey the same sociological message. Since such an adaptation is described an interpretation of verbal signs by means of signs of nonverbal sign systems, it comes under the category of Intersemiotic translation or transmutation, as defined by Russian linguist Roman Jakobson. The fact that the novel, which describes the conflict between the Turkish secular intellectuals and the antisecular peasants in the Turkish Independence War, was adapted in 1996 means it might be seen as giving a cautionary message to the people since it occurred at a period when the secular intellectuals and the antisecular people had a conflict in Turkey. This film might have been used to deliver a warning social message because visual media has a greater impact than a novel. The novel and the film in this work will be viewed thematically. Since adapting a novel into a film is defined as a translation process, the message it gives to the audience can be viewed within translation sociology. In this respect, the ominous message of the film can be regarded as societal guidance since, on the one hand, it criticises the intellectuals, and on the other hand, it describes the negative consequences of the sharia regime, which the country might lapse into. Intersemiotic translation studies are experiencing growing interest at the moment and they have an interdisciplinary and interactive relation with sociology, guiding new works in this field by means of societal reflections.},author={Arsun URAS YILMAZ-& Didem PAMUK},year={2018},journal={International Journal of Language Academy}}
