Abstract

In this study, Ziya Gökalp’s poem entitled Lisân and Asaf Hâlet Çelebi’s poem entitled İstanbulumun Dili have been analysed comparatively by identifying “passwords” in consideration of the poets’ views about Turkish language and in particular İstanbul Turkish Language.Though Ziya Gökalp, who lived between the years 1876-1924 and Asaf Hâlet Çelebi, who lived between 1907-1958 were two poets who produced works of art at different periods of Turkish literature and adopted different senses of art; they were both sensitive about Turkish language. After the two poems have been analysed it’s been deduced that the polemical and complicated atmosphere of language at their time prompted these poets to think about language. According to the data gained at the end of the study, the main point that the two poets disagree on about Turkish language is that while Ziya Gökalp presented several leading principles about Turkish language to Anatolian Turks, as an “ideologue”; Asaf Halet Çelebi preferred to criticise “Pure Turkish Ideology” and its supporters by taking refuge in a fabulous atmosphere and by original images that he produced with several symbols and images, as an “artist”.
