Abstract

The text which is a set of sentences in coherent order can be defined as “It has the value of communication, it is an action specific and dynamic complement, it has both a beginning and an end, it is a meaningful structure where linguistic signs follow in quick succession”. However, text linguistics studies transsentential linguistics units; tries to reveal various structures of text from a descriptive and critical point of view. Coherence is the first of all criteria that make text as a text. This criterion results from linking clauses and linear order of a text. Linguistic constituents providing coherence of a text help to create grammatical, syntactical, semantic and logical links both within segments and between segments. Linguistic constituents providing coherence of a text help to establish isotopy in a text by creating cohesion. Reference is one of the constituents which are necessary for a text to have the feature of coherence. It has an important role in creating coherence and cohesion of a text. Anaphora and cataphora are the most specific types of reference that appears in different ways in a text. Both of the abovementioned references link the information in the text and maintain continuity and linearity of the text by providing coherence between sentences. The aim of this study based on coherence is to analyze anaphora and cataphora constituents in French in respect of their presence and way of their interpretation. These reference constituents which have an important function in the field of textual coherence and cohesion were classified according to their usage. These anaphora and cataphora constituents were searched in the authentic news texts of RFI and were analyzed at the level of sentence. It is analyzed if there is a difference in the usage between them by translating these sentences from source text to target text.
