Abstract

This research is a descriptive screening model aiming to determine the opinions of teacher candidates in special education department in literacy teaching for special needs individuals. This study was carried out with 3rd grade students (n = 36) in Mustafa Kemal University Faculty of Education Special Education Department. The data of the study used a semi-structured interview form related to the Special Needed Literacy Teaching developed by the researcher. This form consists of three parts and three questions as special needs type, teaching method technique, literacy teaching. Negotiations were collected in 40 minutes in written form. The data obtained from the semi-structured interview form was evaluated on the basis of the content analysis method. The data are divided into themes and exemplified by the opinions of the teacher candidates. According to the obtained data, the teacher candidates are seeing the types of obstacles that difficulty of reading and writing is realized (f = 16), mental (f = 12) and hearing (f = 8). According to the results of the research, prospective teachers who explain the reasons for the difficulty of literacy teaching of visually handicapped compared to other types of obstacles have drawn particular attention to the teaching and the nature of the Braille alphabet. They categorize the most important reasons for the difficulty of teaching literacy to mentally retarded students as follows: keeping students in perception and understanding problems, collecting their attention and learning, retention and generalization in individuals. In the case of hearing-impaired people, communication due to language and speech disorders due to hearing loss is poor, social interaction skills are poor, and students have difficulty in forgetting, thus teaching reading and writing is difficult.
