Abstract

The objective of this study is, in the light of the arguments of a number of previous academic studies in the field of idioms, to examine and present the criteria of classifying a word group as an idiom. The idioms starting with A and B letters in Oxford Dictionary of Idioms were, in this regard, selected, while the other words groups which cannot be classified as idioms were omitted. Despite the fact that the cover page of the dictionary claims to include only idioms, the back cover states that the dictionary also consists of proverbs and other word groups; however, there is not even a single explanation or sign pointing out whether the entry words in the dictionary are idioms or proverbs or word groups, which creates a problem for readers. Therefore, this study, which is not limited to the idioms starting with A and B letter, also aims to suggest some solutions for this problem in detail since recent dictionaries in our country focus on idioms, proverbs and reduplications separately and classify each word group through indexes. However, this is not the case for word groups in Oxford Dictionary of Idioms, and every word group, irrespective of their types, are presented with no description and commentary.
