Abstract

The aim of this study is to identify the ideal age and classroom size with the opinions of foreign language teachers. In this study a through examination of the literature and the opinions of foreign language teachers about the ideal foreign language learning age and classroom size are given. The work group of the study is composed of 28 foreign language teachers selected according to maximum variation sampling method from different public and private schools. Phenomenological research design, one of the research designs among qualitative researches was used and content analysis was utilized in the analysis of the data. As the findings of the study, when the opinions of foreign language teachers are examined, almost all (%96) of the foreign language teachers stated that children must start learning a foreign language before the age of eight. The teachers in the work group mostly stated that children should start at preschool time when they are 4 or 5. The participant teachers stated that as the children’s are more curious and eager at early ages, teaching a foreign language will be more effective. According to teachers, children must learn a foreign language after they have learned their mother tongue. The other focus of the study was the ideal classroom size and all the teachers were in agreement that there must be at most 20 students in a language classroom. An important ratio of the teachers declared that there must be 15 students in an ideal language classroom.
