UNDERSTANDING RUMI’S SAYINGS USED IN TURKISH COURSES IN THE CONTEXT OF VALUES EDUCATION

Abstract

Mevlana is one of the prominents who have been modeled by most people in the society and have a significant impact on the formation of the judgments of the society about values. Mevlana's words are frequently used in Turkish lessons and in the studies of values education in schools and are aimed to be internalized by the students. As a matter of fact, primary school students may misunderstand adages, sayings and maxims since they have not yet reached at the stage of abstract thinking. In this context, it is important to know how students make sense of these kinds of sayings and to conduct values education accordingly. The aim of this research is to identify how primary school students attain meaning to Rumi’s sayings and examine them in the context of values education. Phenomenology, which is one of the qualitative research methods, was preferred in the research. The study was conducted with 60 students (34 girls and 26 boys) who were studying in a public school in Isparta city center in 2018-2019 academic year. The data were collected by interview forms and 7 most commonly used sayings of Mevlana were included in the interview forms. The data collected in the study were analyzed by content analysis technique and reliability was obtained by coder triangulation method. According to the findings, some of the elementary school students correctly interpreted the seven most used sayings of Mevlana and expressed them nearly to their originially intended meanings. However, some students moved away from their original meaning completely and attained different meanings to them. As a result, this study has shown that in the context of values education to primary school students, using Rumi’s sayings directly does not always create the desired effect on students.
