Abstract

Identifying the sources of difficulties encountered in the process of learning and teaching a foreign language and developing methods to overcome these difficulties are among the main objectives of comparative/contrastive linguistic studies. Most of the difficulties that arise in processes of language learning and teaching are often caused by differences between languages. Having this in mind, this study focuses on the most distinctive linguistic features in Serbian and Turkish languages, which belong to different language families and exhibit considerably different structural features. These different structures that are present at all linguistic levels such as morphological, semantic and syntactic ones appear as a challenging factor in native Turkish speakers’ process of learning the Serbian language. This study, in which a contrastive approach has been adopted, aims to identify the mentioned structures and to offer some solutions aimed at resolving the problems arising from these differences in Serbian teaching. In this respect, it was pointed out that teaching some different structures in Serbian, which is the second foreign language for most Turkish learners, would be more effective with the help of the first foreign language (usually English). In addition, one part of the study deals with the category of aspect, which is represented in a morphological manner specific to Serbian and other Slavic languages. The aspect category represents one of the most challenging issues for Turkish people learning Serbian, and it is expressed in a different manner in Turkish. It is seen that aspect and tense categories in Turkish are often confused with each other due to their intertwinement in conjugation, and many native Turkish speakers do not have sufficient knowledge about the aspect category in their native language. As a result, the study aims to raise awareness about the structures in Turkish to which the aspect in Serbian corresponds by refering to some basic features of the aspect category in Turkish.
