Abstract

PROSPECTIVE TURKISH TEACHERS' LEVELS OF PROFICIENCY IN METHODS, TECHNIQUES, STRATEGIES AND APPROACHES
The purpose of the current study was to examine the Turkish Teaching Department undergraduates’ levels of proficiency in methods, techniques, strategies and approaches. This may both display prospective teachers’ levels of proficiency in methods, techniques, strategies and approaches and reveal their perspectives on Turkish classes practically. Thus, prospective teachers’ knowledge levels may be determined basing on methods, techniques, strategies and approaches in introduction, body and assessment processes of Turkish classes. The current study is a cross-sectional study in which differences in gender and class levels for methods, techniques, strategies and approaches were analyzed. The participants, chosen by convenient sampling, were 189 undergraduates studying at Turkish Teaching Department in Amasya University. The data collection instruments were a general information form and a four-item-questionnaire to determine methods, techniques, strategies and approaches that the undergraduates had an idea for. The statistical data were analyzed via SPSS 23. Firstly, responses from the undergraduates were classified using frequencies and percentages and the 5 responses having the highest frequency were reported. In the second step of the analysis, the correct responses from each level of class were given 1 point, and incorrect and non-responded ones were given 0 point, and each undergraduate’s knowledge level of methods, techniques, strategies and approaches were determined. Then, Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis H tests were performed in order to determine if their knowledge level differed according to gender and class levels, respectively. As a result of the study, prospective Turkish teachers’ knowledge levels of methods, techniques, strategies and approaches were found to be very low.
