Abstract

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN VOCABULARY SIZE AND FOUR LANGUAGE SKILLS OF TURKISH EFL LEARNERS
This study investigates Turkish EFL high school students’ receptive vocabulary size and its relation with their foreign langage skills. 34 Turkish EFL high school students whose age ranged from 16 to 18 participated in the study. Their language skills were measured by Cambridge First Certificate English Exam (FCE) and their vocabulary size was measured by Vocabulary Level Test (VLT, 2k-10k) (Schmidt, Schmidt & Clapham, 2001). The participants’ vocabulary test scores were correlated with the scores of each language skill in the proficiency test (FCE) by using Pearson Product moment correlation statistics in SPSS 16.0 program. The test results of study indicated that the majority of the participants mastered high frequency words in 2000 and 3000 at receptive vocabulary level and there was a significant moderate positive correlation between the participants’ vocabulary size and each language skill in English. The results of the study also revealed that the participants’receptive vocabulary size predicted their speaking performance better than other language skills. This means that vocabulary size of Turkish EFL high school students at recognition dimension has the strongest relationship with the students’ speaking skill. At the end of the study, some possible reasons for the results were discussed and some suggestions for further studies were given in the light of the findings.
