It is getting importance to learn at least one foreign language in today’s world. Knowing one foreign language is not seen sufficient anymore and people needs to learn more than one foreign language. Knowing more than one foreign language is not accepted as an privileged situation in Europe. German language was included into high schools’ curriculum as the second foreign language in the framework of European Union harmonization standards in 2004. The aim of this study is to explore metaphorical images of high school students’ metaphorical perceptions toward German as a second foreign language. Study group included students enrolled at five different high schools in Elazığ city center 2017-2018 academic year. There are five education zones in Elazığ city center. One school were selected from each education zone. Students from 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades were selected for the study. Data of the study were collected through the use of the prompt “German course is like …………….. because ………….” The sheets were given the students in their classrooms. They were given sufficient time to fill the forms and the sheets were collected in the same way. The students were asked to write the first metaphor for German course. After writing their metaphors, they were asked to write the reasons of the metaphors they developed regarding German course. To analyze the data, content analysis was used. Several categories were identified based on the metaphorical images of the students toward the concept of German course. Negative and positive categories were identified. Some useful recommendations are offered in the directions of the findings of the study.
