Abstract


THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EMPATHY LEVELS AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS OF PROSPECTIVE TURKISH TEACHERS
In this study, the relationship between empathy levels and communication skills of prospective Turkish teachers and whether these levels differ according to their class and gender variables were investigated. In the study, singular and relational screening method, which is one of quantative methods, was used. The study group consisted of 311 prospective Turkish teachers studying at 5 different state universities. In order to determine the empathy levels of the prospective Turkish teachers, “Empathy Level Determination Scale” developed by Kaya and Çolakoğlu (2015) was used and to measure their communication skills “Communication Skills Scale”developed by Tuncer (2008) was used. The data obtained in the study were analyzed by using a statistical program. Number, percentage, mean and standard deviation were used as descriptive statistical methods in the evaluation of the data. The t-test was used to compare the quantitative data between two independent groups, and the one-way Anova test was used to compare the quantitative data among independent groups more than two. Pearson correlation and regression analysis were applied to the continuous variables of the study. As a result of the study, the empathy and communication skills of prospective Turkish teachers were found to be high. There was r = 0.425 positive (p = 0.000 <0.05) relationship between the empathy levels and communication skills of the teachers. Accordingly, the empathy levels increase the level of communication skills. In addition, Turkish teacher candidates' empathy levels and communication skills scores did not show a significant difference according to the class variable but they differed significantly in terms of gender. The mean communication scores of the female students were higher than those of the male students.
