THE EFFECT OF SCAMPER TECHNIQUE ON STUDENTS’ CREATIVE STORY WRITING SKILLS: EXAMPLE OF REWRITING A STORY

Abstract

Creativity is one of the most important skills that individuals should have in 21th century. In the present days, the works on creativity are concerned with how to be developed and educated rather than its importance. Likewise this study gives importance on enhancing education of creativity and also aims to determine the effect of SCAMPER technique, which is thought to contribute creativity, on individuals’ creative story writing skills. This study was carried out with 70 middle school 6th grade students in a public school in Ankara. Within the study students are divided into 5 groups consisting of 14 students per group. At first stage, a well-known story “Little Red Riding Hood” is told to each group and then made them rewrite this story. At second stage, students are educated about SCAMPER technique and some practices are made. After that each group rewrote the “Little Red Riding Hood” story and then the two results of groups are analyzed. The stories rewritten before and after SCAMPER education are compared according to some criteria. Opinions of students about SCAMPER technique and creative story writing activity are also gathered by interviewing. According to the compared results, it is determined that most of the groups wrote more creative stories after SCAMPER education. According to interviews students stated that they liked the SCAMPER activity. They also stated that SCAMPER activity made them think about more original ideas on story writing enhanced their imagination and turned the course into an enjoyable activity.
