Abstract

Interaction among languages is a historical fact. Every language, effects and be affected from the languages of other cultures as a result of interactions deriving from various reasons. This situation is normal to a degree on condition that to be bound to the rules of language. Because, language is a living organisation which transforms, develops, effects and be affected. However, the interactions which can deform the peculiar structure of language, is unfavourable because it can produce serious undesirable results from the assimilation of nations to the dissolution of national consciousness. Turkish language also could not keep itself out of such kind of large interactions and during some periods even felt in a secondary position compare to Arabic and Persian. One of the most important initiative which evolved as a reaction to this development is Yeni Lisan (New Language) Movement. Ömer Seyfettin, the pioneer of Yeni Lisan, expressed the rules about simplification of the language of the day, namely Ottoman Turkish, in an article published in the 1st issue of Genç Kalemler (Young Pens) Journal. In this article, we will analyze the effects of Yeni Lisan Movement, which can be regarded as a call to the protecting the national consciousness by the way of simplification of language, on the current Turkish language by addressing sample texts from present day Turkish.
