COHERENCE AND COHESİON IN PERSUASIVE PREPARED SPEECHES OF TURKISH TEACHER CANDIDATES

Abstract

Speech which plays an important role in an accurate and healthy communication is divided into various types in terms of aim, relation with the audience and form element. In persuasive speech, which is one of these types, it is necessary for an individual to support his/her idea in any topic by applying to various idea development methods, to try to enable credibility and to suggest acceptable ideas. Screening method has been used in this study which aims at determining coherence and cohesion conditions of Turkish teacher candidates in their persuasive prepared speeches. Research group is composed of 25 teacher candidates who study at the 3rd Grade in Turkish Language Training Department of Education Faculty of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University. Research data has been collected through recording persuasive prepared speeches of Turkish teacher candidates by a tape recorder and transferring it to written format in computer environment. This data was evaluated through qualitative and quantitative methods. Numeric data was delivered regarding coherence and cohesion conditions in speech texts in quantitative evaluation while problems in creating texts were explained through examples in qualitative evaluation. “Evaluation Criteria for Coherence Level” which is used in the literature and “Evaluation Criteria for Persuasive Speech Cohesion” which is developed by the researchers were used in quantitative evaluation. In accordance with the research results, Turkish teacher candidates most frequently use junction elements, delivery, word coherence, elliptical expression and substitution as coherence instruments respectively in their persuasive prepared speeches. It has been determined that teacher candidates are on a good level with an average of 3,64/5 to enable cohesion in their prepared speeches.
