Abstract

The use of the Orchon Turkic suffix +lIg and +lUg were used in the old Uighur texts and were a basic function to acknowledge the existence of an object or any concept. However, this suffix is appended to nouns and usually derives adjectives. A different use seems appears to be present in Buddhist and Manicheist Uighur texts. Similar use of this suffix appeared in Kutadgu Bilig on occasions as well. Not only in other periods of Turkic linguistic history but also in Uighur, these words were used as adjectives usually: ayıg “bad, evil”; edgü “good”; “me?ü “endless, immortal”, etc. In addition, these adjectives were used with +lIg, +lUg and had same meanings: ayıglıg “bad, evil”; edgülüg “good”; me?ülüg “endless, immortal”, etc. bilge biliglig bolu tüketmiş erip birle yene yorısar on ayıglıg qılınçıg alqu nomlarıg uqmaqı ugrınta alqu uzanmaq edremlig atası arıg ermeki ugrınta tuggalı bolmış erip (Sho. 9); ol kamag burkanlar barça tınlıglarıg edgülüg me?ilig kılgalır üçün bo daranı nomug yarlıkadılar (AY 356/2); me?ü me?ü ornagın bolup özüm me?ülüg :: ertükteg nom tatıgın üzüksüzin ol me?ig üküş tınlıgka üledim (AY 368/7)...In this paper, we will examine the function of this suffix where it was unspecified previously and we will seek answers to the following questions: • Why was this function needed in Uighur and partly Karakhanid?• Were there differences in meaning and context between two langauges? Was there any affect on the Uighur period translations on their usage?
