CULTURAL TRANSFER IN BILINGUAL CHILDREN’S BOOK THE REFLECTION OF THE TURKISH CULTURE IN THE GERMAN TRANSLATION OF “DEDEM KORKUT BOY BOYLADI”

Abstract

This article analyses the Turkish-German bilingual work of “Dede Korkut Boy Boyladı” (1984), comprising the original Turkish version and its German translation prepared by Adnan Binyazar and Hartwig Mau. This book is proposed for teaching Turkish as a native language in bilingual schools in Germany. The book is recommended for children and young people who were born and who have been living in Germany. As a result of restricted input in Turkish and lack of the Turkish cultural environment, these children are known to have deficiencies in reading, writing, speaking and pragmatics skills in their native Turkish language and lack the knowledge of Turkish cultural realities (REF). Therefore it is important, that the young readers encounter with their own culture. In this respect, the children’s literature researcher Göte Klingberg (1973) attempted to reveal the cultural objects in the source and target texts in the light of the approach of cultural transfer in translation. The aim of this study is to show how cultural elements are transferred in the target text.It has been reported that the target audience groups tend to read such bilingual books first in their dominant language, German, and then in Turkish (REF). In this respect the translation methods and approaches are of crucial importance. For this reason, this article examines and discusses Binyazar’s work focusing on its German translation and tries to demonstrate what translation strategies are adopted while transferring cultural elements in the translation. The findings of the analyses have revealed that the translation depicts Turkish customs and traditions, and gives bilingual children a chance to get in touch with their heritage language and culture. In this respect, the availability of bilingual children’s book including a narrative in the first language with its efficient translation strategies is of crucial importance for bilingual young people living abroad. Such books give the young people living abroad a chance to resolve their linguistic deficiencies in their native Turkish language and learn more about Turkish culture. It has been determined, that the translation of Binyazar's work into German, reflects a great deal of cultural elements of the source culture. With this study, it has been tried to reveal the importance of the “source text-oriented” translation approach in the translations of the bilingual works to be prepared in future.
