Abstract

Adverbial clauses are part of the grammar that has been extensively and comprehensively studied in the literature of modern linguistic studies in terms of their structural and functional aspects. Preliminary observations indicate that in the books of teaching Turkish, this subject presents a similar and recursive framework, and that it is far from providing an elegant description. In this respect, the modern findings as to the relevant grammar subject has not been fully transferred to the contexts of teaching Turkish as a native language. The aim of this study is to transfer the structural and functional aspects of this grammar subject into teaching Turkish environments as it has been analyzed in modern grammar studies. To this end, we first provided a comprehensive analysis of adverbial clauses in modern grammar studies. Then, we moved on to desrcibe what has been stated under the title of converbials in the books of teaching Turkish. At this point, we employed the method of “document analysis”. Next, the relevant material was presented within the scope of a teaching proposal presented within framework of an interim conclusion. This material includes all structural and functional aspects of the adverbial clauses as they have been analyzed in modern grammar studies.
