Abstract

Storytelling provides the permanence of cultural heritage. Storytelling, as a tool for experience, cultural transfer and a bridge to past, enables us to present the oral culture in an entertaining way. Throughout the centuries, people have acquired the knowledge via oral language. People make a story out of knowledge in order to convey it and narrator’s talents enrich these stories. As a result, storytelling has become a significiant teaching method in education. It is understood that storytelling in education develops students’ academic achievement. Storytelling makes knowledge perceptible and lasting. It enchances writing, listening, speaking and oral language skills. It also develops students’ emphaty, self-expression, critical thinking skills and helps students realize their own abilities. It gives students the opportunity to tell stories, create their own stories, discover and express themselves. However storytelling in written language has fallen behind and is rarely used in education when compared to other teaching methods. In this research storytelling is studied because of its academic and social value. The literature has been reviewed and a general frame has been drawn for storytelling as the oldest form of education. Findings has been classified and inquired as storytelling, history of storytelling, its educational value, storytelling researches, its benefits to the students and features of narrator.
