TURKISH LANGUAGE TEACHING ENVIRONMENTS FOR RIGHTS AND FREEDOM: A SAMPLE OF LEARNING SITUATION

Abstract

This study was performed to reveal how learning situations that may help people gain sensitivity to life and nature should be set with the theme “rights and freedom” in Turkish Language Teaching because in Turkish Language Teaching environments, rights and freedom of humans, children, life, and animals should be sensed with the awareness of democratic culture, qualitatively designed in a multi-stimuli way. Making students gain knowledge, skill and values through such learning experiences may help grow individuals who are expected to embrace reciprocal respect and love; be aware of their rights and responsibilities; accept differences; be tolerant and sensitive; be respectful towards life, and pay value and importance to personality. Plainly speaking, throughout the Turkish Language Teaching process, introducing human being, life and nature with enhancing students’ emotion and thought universe by using verbal, visual and auditory stimuli may help them sensitive to rights and freedom. Thus, students may both improve their linguistic skills in Turkish classes and make self-regulation for their emotions, thoughts and behaviors by the aid of the themes for democratic value which are sensed by qualified stimuli. Data in this study were obtained by the activities to develop right and freedom pertaining to introduction, progression, conclusion and evaluation parts of the learning situation. Moreover, a number of visual and verbal texts, Turkish Language Teaching program, caricatures, short films and evaluation forms were utilized to prepare these activities. Upon examining the data, it was discussed what kinds of stimuli should be available for rights and freedom in the educational model which has the quality to improve students’ emotions, thoughts and behaviors and a framework in a proper conception was created. As a result of this study, within the context of rights and freedom, it was proposed how children and adults rights, equality of women and men, environmental awareness, right to live and individual freedom should be presented to children by learning situations equipped with qualified stimuli which are appropriate for the developmental level.
