RELATION BETWEEN THE LITERACY SELF-EFFICACY AND THE ABILITY OF READING COMPREHENSION OF THOSE WHO LEARN TURKISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

Abstract

In this study, the relation between the literacy self-efficacy and the ability of reading comprehension of 137 students, who are at B2 level and learn Turkish as a foreign language in Inonu University Turkish Teaching Center and kamp, have been determined. In the research, the ‘Self-efficacy Scale of Literacy for the Students Learning Turkish as a Foreign Language” developed by Kan and Gungor (2016) and ‘Test of Achievement of Reading Comprehension for Those Who Learn Turkish as a Foreign Language’ developed by Altunkaya (2016) have been used. In the study where quantitative research method is used, the data obtained from the data collection tools has been analysed with SPSS package program. As a result of the analysis, it has been understood that the students’ self-efficacy perception and the level of reading comprehension exceed the average; there is a weak but positive meaningful relation between the achievement of reading comprehension and the self-efficacy perception of reading skill; and that the level of the self-efficacy perception of reading skill increases the level of achievement of reading comprehension. It has been seen that the students’ self-efficacy perception does not show any meaningful difference according to the factors such as age, state of education, number of known languages other than Turkish and time of learning Turkish; but depending on the gender factor, self-efficacy perception of reading of the female students is higher than the male students. It has been stated that the level of achievement of reading comprehension of those who learn Turkish as a foreign language does not show any meaningful difference according to the factors such as age, state of education, and on the contrary, such level shows a difference according to factors number of known languages other than Turkish and time of learning Turkish.
