Abstract

“Gibi” is a postposition that has been witnessed in the forms of kipi/kibi, kimi, gibi, bigi etc. in historical texts since the 11th century and existed in many branches of the Turkic, except for the Turkic dialects in Siberia. This article examines this postposition used in the forms of kibi, kimi and gibi in Oghuz group Turkish dialects with specific reference to its variants and distribution in Turkish dialects. The article discusses that the consonants of this postposition is seen in such four basic sequences as G-B-, G-M-, K-B- and K-M- and that the G-B-, and G-M- sequences are witnessed in Western group dialects; K-G- in North-eastern and the 2nd and 3rd subgroups of Eastern group dialects; yet K-M- sequence is commonly seen in Eastern and the 6th subgroup of Western group dialects, and various variants have been found to be used together in some dialects. Three detailed maps representing variants of postposition “gibi” are also presented in the article.
