The criteria in such distinction are the meaning that verbs per se add to the sentence and the way they are used in the sentence. With respect to the criteria, two points are worth noticing. Firstly, the distinction between main and auxiliary verbs are not drawn sufficiently; secondly, auxiliary verbs do not have a meaning and become meaningful through the noun or verb, with which they are used. That’s why, the present study is based on these two criteria and investigates what the auxiliary verbs are in Turkish, in which structures they are used and how they act within a sentence in terms of their meaning. Based on the response given to the question of “how should auxiliary verbs be defined?”, the present study therefore sheds light on which verbs have been considered auxiliary verbs and how they have been used in grammar studies so far. Also, the present study intends to make a consistent definition and classification of auxiliary verbs. The present study has found that in Turkish, the distinction between main and auxiliary verbs are not drawn sufficiently, the verbs that are actually main verbs but are used as auxiliary verbs are not specified and meanings of the words given as auxiliary verbs are sometimes overlooked.
