Abstract

Discourse and text analysis have been a subject of considerable work in the social sciences and especially in the discipline of sociology in recent years. In general, text and discourse analyses are carried out within the framework of structuralist, poststructuralist and hermeneutical theories. These theories contain important elements such as system, subject, object, power, and deconstruction in the analysis of a certain text. In keeping with the elements of theories and theories mentioned above, this study contains the text analysis of George Orwell's Animal Farm novel. The undergraduates (N=74) majoring in Communication Sciences participated in the study. The participants were taught the theories of discourse and text analysis and were asked to analyze the text by asking a single question consisting of two sub-questions about Animal Farm. Participants' written texts were analyzed through inductive content analysis, and thus certain concepts were derived from the data. In total, 30 concepts were elicited and 10 of them were formed by clustering analysis. The results of the study show that the participants use more poststructuralist theory in analyzing the text. Most of the participants interpreted the text based on the concepts of power and power relations of text analysis. The other participants, on the other hand, analyzed the system in the novel by describing the text more in the framework of structuralist theory.
