Abstract

This study aimed to investigate effectiveness of the ER program both on reading comprehension level and reading habits. It was designed as an experimental study and pretest-posttest control and comparison group design was used as the pattern. Learners’ reading comprehension level and reading habits in English were the dependent variables and extensive reading program was the independent variable. English Reading Habits Scale and Reading Comprehension Test were used to collect data. The intervention study includes allocated experimental and control groups, pretest of the groups to ensure parity, treatment (30 sessions, 2 sessions per week for extensive reading program), posttest of the groups to see the effects on the dependent variable. 180 beginner level college students who have enrolled in English class at a State College in Turkey took part in this study. 90 students from this group compromised the experimental group and 90 students served as the control group. The result of the study revealed that in improving reading comprehension the extensive reading approach was at least as effective as the intensive approach. Also, it’s more effective in improving learners’ reading habits than intensive program. After the study, both the teachers and the students pointed out that extensive reading program was effective in improving learners2 reading habits.
