THE FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING METHOD LECTURERS PAY ATTENTION TO WHILE TEACHING TURKISH TO FOREIGNERS

Abstract

This study aims primarily to define the foreign language teaching method that lecturers follow while teaching Turkish to foreigners. In this study, only the first four foreign language teaching methods are examined out of the16 foreign language teaching methods classified by Gür (1995, 24-35). This study is based on a ‘qualitative research method’ and prefers ‘phenomenology’ as a qualitative design. For data collection, the 28 item “Foreign Language Teaching Model Attitude Scale” which was prepared by Kabadayı (2003: 65-66) and based on the defined characteristics of foreign language teaching methods were used. The items of the scale were adopted as “fixed format survey interview” which is a ‘close-end question’ type. ‘Maximum diversity sample’ as a ‘purposeful sampling method’ was preferred in order to identify the foreign language teaching method that is considered more important by the lecturers who teach Turkish to foreign students in 5 regions of Turkey namely, Marmara, Aegean, Mediterranean, Southeastern Anatolia and Central Anatolia. ‘Descriptive Analysis’ was used in analyzing the data. The study group consisted of a total of 23 Turkish lecturers working in Istanbul University, Necmettin Erbakan University, Dokuz Eylül University, Gazi University, Adana Science and Technology University and Harran University. At the end of this study, it was concluded that 23 Turkish lecturers working in 6 different universities pay attention primarily to “Communicative Approach” (89.13%). However, the method that is most important differs according to universities. It was concluded that while 7 Turkish lecturers working in Necmettin Erbakan University (94.99%) and Istanbul University (84.99%) pay attention primarily to “Natural Approach Method;” a total of 16 Turkish lecturers from Dokuz Eylül University (99.24%), Gazi University (84.99%), Adana Science and Technology University (91.33%) and Harran University (89.99%) pay attention primarily to “Communicative Approach Method.”
