Abstract

In this study, it is examined through the word association test technique the cognitive structures of the students who are studying in the Translation and Interpreting Department. Translation competence, which is one of the basic skills that translation education aims to provide students, is one of the most frequently mentioned subjects. Because, the translation competence constitutes the essence of translation education curriculum is understood by the students, or how it is understood, is directly related to whether the curriculum is successful or not. For this purpose, a research was conducted in Marmara University, Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies (German, French, English) and in the first term of 2018-2019 academic year, word association test were conducted with 47 students. In the first part of the two-part test, the translation competence was given as a key concept, and within 50 seconds, it was asked to write other words that were evocative in the minds of this word. In the second part, they were asked to write a sentence to explain the keyword within 50 seconds. At the end of the study, multiple repetitive words were divided into six categories and analyzed according to the subjects they were related to. The sentences were divided into three categories: sentences with scientific knowledge, sentences with non-scientific or superficial information, and sentences containing misconception. At the end of the study, the students' perceptions of this concept, how they define this concept, whether there are misconceptions are tried to be answered.
