Abstract

This research was conducted to determine the reading comprehension and writing skills of high school seniors who graduated and will enter the “College Entrance Examination” (YKS) in examine the effect of multiple choice exams on writing skills. Problem: University entrance exam system does not measure students' writing skills in Turkey. The Turkish exams conducted with multiple choice test method, the ability of students reading comprehension is measured mainly. How are the successes in multiple-choice exams and the successes in open ended exams and the writing skills?Method: This study is a quantitative study conducted with the scanning model. Participants: The universe of the research; It is the senior high school students who will enter the university entrance examination (YKS) in 2018. The sample is senior high school students consists of a total of 92 students selected according to their academic achievement. These students have the highest, middle and lowest level of academic achievements in Sakarya-Turkey Conclusion: The average achievement of all students participating in the open ended exam is 48,489, and 81,304 in the multiple choice exam. According to the research, there is a significant difference between the multiple choice exam and the open ended exam. It has been stated that the vast majority of students in writing skills are inadequate. Therefore, the success of students in the test exams can be considered as a virtual success. Students made mistakes in writing, punctuation and punctuation in the open-ended exam. In addition, some of the students left the answers blank or gave an incorrect answer in the open-ended exam. Thus, it has been stated that the lack of students is not only limited to writing skills but also has deficiencies in reading comprehension.
