THE EFFECT OF ACTIVE LEARNING IN TEACHING TURKISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE TO IMPROVE PRODUCTIVE SKILLS

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of active learning on the development of productive skills in Turkish as a foreign language. The sample of this study is consisted Syrian female students (N: 34) who are at the 4th grade level primary school in Fatih Sultan Mehmet Temporary Training Centre in Altındağ (Ankara/Turkey) in the academic year 2016-2017. In the experimental period, the module was applied to the experimental group according to the active learning approach within the same curriculum for 12 weeks. According to findings, average score of the control group's pre-test writing skill was x¯: 3.14, while the post test was x¯: 5.71. The experimental groups’ pre test average of the writing skill was x¯: 4.10 and the post test x¯: 10.75. The results of the analysis, the development and success of the writing skill is significant for the experimental group [F(1-32) = 29.229; p<.05]. The average score of the control group's pre-test speaking skill was x¯: 2.64, while the post test was x¯: 5.35. The experimental groups’ average score of the speaking skill was x¯: 3.10 and the post test x¯: 7.00. The level of effect on the development and success of the speaking skill is significant for the experimental group [F(1-32) = 4.275; p<.05]. As a result, it was determined that Turkish 4th grade level language as a foreign language structured according to the active learning approach is effective in the development of the productive skills and student success.
