Abstract

Giving other names to the same plant is a common occurrence for Turkish. People in different regions have named the plant by highlighting the different characteristics and functions of this plant and this has caused a plant to be named with many names. In fact, the names of plants with similar characteristics are mixed together, one name represents many plants. Nowadays in the cities more commonly known as purslane, the name of the plant is becoming widespread in Anatolia cibille, elmelik, erekleme, gilik, kıbıçkan, sirken, pirpirim, soğukluk, tohmegân and so on. There are many different names when the variables of these words are taken into consideration, the number of words used for purslane is increasing. In this article, the names used for the purslane in Turkish from the past to the present and the words purslane in Anatolia were discussed. The origins and meaning characteristics of these words were evaluated, the reasons for giving these names were emphasized and the possible reasons for the number of words were discussed. As a result, the most commonly used word for this plant in Anatolia is semizotu in the standard language, but it is also seen that pirpirim and its variants, which are a foreign origin, have been used in all parts of Anatolia. It was also found that more than one word was used for the same plant in the same region. Considering the possible shortcomings in Derleme Sözlüğü, it was concluded that the names used in Anatolia for the purslane plant would increase and the places of use would have a different appearance than the existing ones.
