EVALUATING ATTITUDES OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TOWARDS WRITING IN TERMS OF VARIOUS VARIABLES

Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the attitudes of high school students related with writing in terms of various variables; to present results and suggestions based on the findings obtained. The data related with the study was collected by Writing Attitude Scale Towards High School Students developed by Akaydın and Kurnaz (2015). Descriptive statistics were used in data analysis. The data collected through the questionnaire was expressed by independent sample t test and single factor variance analysis (ANOVA). The study was carried out with 398 students attending various high schools in the center of Kütahya province during the fall semester of 2017-2018 academic year. Based on the findings, it was found that the attitudes of high school students towards writing did not show a significant difference compared to the schools studied, that there was a significant difference in favor of girls according to gender and that attitudes towards writing decreased with increasing grades. In addition, it was observed that the result demonstrated a significant difference in favor of the ones loving to read according to their status of loving to read books or not and also according to their status of loving Turkish Language and Literature course or not. Students who spend more time reading boks were found to have higher writing attitudes than those who read less or do not read. Again, it was concluded that students' writing attitudes demonstrated a significant difference in favor of those who write texts/poetry in their free time and spend more time for writing texts/poetry.
