Abstract

Qasim Amin, the pioneer of Arabic feminism, is an Egyptian intellectual who wrote on freedom and education with respect to women. He penned many works on Egyptian and other eastern women’s problems related to freedom and education. Two of the most important of these works are Tahrir’al Mar’ah (The Liberation of Women), which was written with a clear feminist outlook, and al-Mar’atu’al Jadidah (The New Woman), which is the sequel to Tahrir’al Mar’ah. In his works, Amin plays an important role in reminding women of their rights. In general, the role of the 19th and 20th century intellectuals was not only to write a literary work but also to enlighten their community and give a message to them. Accordingly, Amin's works influenced the Egyptian society and made him a pioneer of various social movements in Egypt. Examining such a significant writer and aristocrat is important in unearthing the similarities and differences in his works and appreciating better his intellectual contribution to the Egyptian society. In addition, some of Amin’s ideas transformed during his relatively short lifespan, which is reflected throughout his intellectual trajectory, and this point is taken into consideration in choosing the works this article would examine. Therefore, this article aims at comparing these two works of him from the perspective of Amin’s feminism understanding and examining in detail his ideas and the influence of his ideas, thereby reaching a deeper understanding of Amin's feminism, as well as addressing the common intellectual themes in his works.
