Abstract

Every society has its own realities about specific themes, cases and structures. These realities are produced and modified or dissolved (if necessary) by discourses. The fundamental system which is used by the construction of discourse is language. However discourse is created and perceived on the basis of both verbal and non-verbal signs. Today there are many scientific theories and methods that research how and why discourses are constructed. The linguistic oriented Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) is one of them. CDA focuses on the role of the language in the production or reproduction of discourse and deals with power, dominance, ideology, othering such as polarization between US and THEM. CDA studies are mainly based on media texts to examine the representations of specific events, actions or situations. The reason for this is the dominant role of media on production of its own discourse and the power to reach every level of society using the various sources of mass medium. The aim of this study is to find out the discourse about Istanbul and Turkey in German media. The corpus is comprised of news that are published in Germany's highest circulation newspaper Bild in the first six months of 2019, that deal with Istanbul city. The news have been examined with the CDA methods of Teun van Djik (2013; 2015) and Norman Fairclough (2003; 2012). Moving towards the representation of Istanbul in selected news, this paper tries to determine the discourse about Turkey in the German newspaper Bild.
