Abstract

Germans are the leading nation learning Turkish as a foreign language because of missionary, communication, military, political, educational, economic, tourism and immigration reasons. Written by Italian merchants and German monks in the XIV. century, Codex Cumanicus which includes Cuman-German dictionary can be considered as the first important work in this context. Since then, many books have been prepared for the teaching and learning of Turkish as a foreign language for Germans. The aim of this study is to identify Turkish books as a foreign language prepared for the Germans from the Ottoman to the present day and to create a bibliography. In this study in which the qualitative research approach is adopted, the data were collected through literature review. The data were collected under two main headings: Ottoman and Republican periods. 63 works in the Ottoman period and 156 works in the Republican period were identified. The books of which contents are examined were presented in chronological order under different titles considering the purposes of writing. The results of the study show that learning Turkish as a foreign langauge by Germans has a long-standing background and they have been learning Turkish the language of the enemy, friend of the arms, guest, trading partner, country of travel throughout the history.
