Abstract

Abstract

Regarding second/foreign language learning, it is widely acknowledged that speaking skill is the most challenging one to develop among the fundamental skills. Likewise, it is not uncommon for learners of Turkish as a foreign language with different first languages to also struggle with pronouncing Turkish on every level of language proficiency. However, although speaking activities are included during Turkish language courses to foreigners, activities related to pronunciation remain mostly incomplete, which can cause problems such as not being understood correctly in verbal communication. The starting point of this study is the necessity of determining these problems academically.

This article aimed to determine the problems related to Turkish consonants' pronunciation by African students learning Turkish as a foreign language at Çukurova University Turkish Education Application and Research Center. To that end, a questionnaire was prepared in order to determine the consonants that are problematic for these students to pronounce. This questionnaire was carried out with 18 C1 level students from various countries of Africa. As a result of the questionnaire, it was determined that the students had problems with the consonants /c/, /ç/, /j/, and /ş/ in Turkish. In the light of the findings, the study was limited to these consonants, and the words containing the consonants /c/, /ç/, /j/ and /ş/ were prepared with the examples in the pre, inner and final sound (except /c/). Also, sentences containing the sounds [/c/-/ç/] and [/ş/-/j/] claimed to be confusing were prepared. Then, a subgroup of 17 students was asked to read a text, and the performances were recorded with the participants' consent. The voice recordings were transcribed into the phonetic alphabet and analyzed by the researchers. Suggestions were made to overcome the problems experienced by students in the final phase of the study.
