Abstract

It is seen that translation theories have emerged with the acceptance of translation as a science. Thus, translation studies can be made within the frame of translation theories. Translations, which are made in novel, poetry, theater and story, are included in literary translation. The aim of this study is to analyze three different Turkish translations of Guy de Maupassant's Le Bonheur, which left his mark on the 19th century French literature in the genre of stories, within the framework of Gideon Toury's Target-Oriented Translation Theory. It is tried to determine whether the translated texts are compatible with the “adequacy” pole or the “acceptability” pole of the Target-Oriented Translation Theory. As a result of the study, it has been determined that three different translators generally benefit from transposition, changing, addition, borrowing, localization, subtraction, generalization strategies in translation texts. We can say that second translation text is “sufficient translation” due to its dependence on the source text while first and third translation text are “acceptable translations” due to their suitability to target language and its culture. With our study, we aim to contribute to the short-story type translation analysis, to draw attention to the translation norms in Toury's translation theory and to the translator’s norms in the translation process, and to contribute to the field of theoretical translation.
