Abstract

One of the most common derivational processes in world languages is compounding. Noun compounds whose constituent units and outputs are noun, are thought to exist in all languages of the world in variable forms. Due to this prevalence and productivity, there are many studies in the literature on noun compounds. Apart from their grammatical structures, the most interesting features of noun compounds are their semantic compositions and their interpretational characteristics. In generative grammar, like all other linguistic constructs, the meaning of compounds is explained in a rule-driven manner within a series of semantic labeling. Cognitive linguistics, which occupies an opposite theoretical position, sees compounds as a special form of conceptualizing. In this framework, metaphor and metonymy, which are the basic cognitive tools of conceptualization, shape the conceptual formation of the compounds. Noun compounds are formations in which schematic relationships exhibit creative rather than productive activity in a certain usage pattern. In this study, noun compounds in Turkish are dealt with on the basis of metaphor and metonymy, unlike the classifications traditionally made in terms of centrality, and a pre-classification proposal is made. Although some examples exhibit a significant productivity, the compounds that display commonly metaphor and metanymy -based unpredictable semantic formation are seen as clear examples of semantic non-compositionality in this study.
