Abstract

Çeviri stratejileri açısından yapılan incelemelerde Mona Baker’a ait çeviri stratejilerinden faydalanılmıştır.

Abstract

The discipline of translation, which started its research in two fields, the theoretical field and the descriptive field, continues its development in the light of many theories. One of these theories, TargetOriented Translation Theory builds its field of study on translated texts. This theory is based on the principle of determining the relations of translations both with original works and among themselves. According to her theorist Toury, it has been stated that society cannot be isolated from the translation process, and the concept of norms (social conditions) has been developed in this direction. The effect of translation strategies applied by translators during translation on translation has also taken its place among the study areas of this theory. In our study, the novel “Les Enfants Terribles” (the Holy Terrors) published in 1929 by Jean Cocteau, one of the leading artists of France, who has the identity of a poet, writer and director and his two Turkish translations have been examined in the context of translator decisions. The translation strategies preferred by the translators and the decisions they took were tried to be described. Translation strategies belonging to Mona Baker were used in the analyzes made in terms of translation strategies. At the same time, the concept of norm put forward by Toury, pre-process translation norms and translation process norms are included. Thus, it is aimed to examine the translator's decisions taken in converting the source text to the target text, and the effective methods in making these decisions, at the level of grammar, syntax and style. For this purpose, randomly selected sections from the source text and their two Turkish translations were analyzed by comparative analysis. As a result of the examinations, it was found that translation preferences were made in accordance with the source text in Özen's translation work, and there were occasional differences in translation preferences in the translated work of Ureturk, also with the influence of the historical and cultural context of the period in which it was written.
