Abstract
Afro-Amerikan edebiyatının önemli isimlerinden Toni Morrison Ötekinin Kökeni adlı çalışmasında öteki algısının nasıl inşa edildiğini Sevilen, Cennet, En Mavi Göz, Yuva başta kendi eserleri olmak üzere çeşitli edebi eserlere başvurarak karşılaştırmalı biçimde inceler. Ernest Hemingway, Joseph Conrad gibi ünlü romancıların romanlarına da eleştirilerinde yer veren Morrison siyah karakterler üzerinden yaratılan anlatım biçimlerine ve romantik söylemlere dışlayıcı bir yaklaşım sergiler. Bu anlamda söz konusu eser Morrison’ın da siyah bir yazar olması sebebiyle kişisel boyuta ve karşılaştırma yöntemine başvurularak oluşturulmuş, öteki, ötekileştirme, yabancı gibi kavramları irdeleyen eleştiriler içerir. Irkçılık sorununa eğilmeyi ihmal etmeyen yazar, Amerikan tarihini referans alarak siyah ve beyaz karşıtlığı üzerinden yaratılan zalimane muamelenin süregeldiğine de dikkat çeker. Köle-efendi ilişkisini öteki bağlamında ele alan Morrison, kölelerin ötekileştirilerek nasıl toplum dışı edildiklerinden bahsederken edebiyat dünyasına da eğilir. Siyahlara ilişkin indirgemeci yaklaşımları sorgular ve bu yaklaşımdan nasıl uzaklaşılabileceğinin de yollarını arar. Bu bağlamda renk fetişistliğine odaklanarak bu durumun edebi eserlerde yarattığı problemleri ele alır. Aynı zamanda okurun edebi eserlerden beklentilerini de sorgulayan Morrison, öteki olanla karşılaşmaktan korku duyan okur profiline yönelik kurgulanan eserlerin ister istemez düştüğü hatayı gün yüzüne çıkarır. Yazarın kendi eserlerini de eleştiri süzgecinden geçirdiği bu çalışma bazı edebiyat eserlerinde sığ bir şekilde işlenen siyah algısını mercek altına alan ve ötekinin çok uzak bir yerde değil aslında içimizde olduğuna dikkat çeken önemli bir eserdir.

Abstract
In her work titled The Origin of the Other, Toni Morrison, one of the leading figures of African-American literature, examines how the perception of the other is constructed by referring to various literary works, especially her own works such as Beloved and Paradise, The Bluest Eye, Home. Morrison, who also includes the novels of famous novelists such as Ernest Hemingway and Joseph Conrad, exhibits a rejecting attitude towards romantic discourses created through stereotypical black characters. In this sense, the work in question contains criticisms that are created by applying the personal dimension and the method of comparison, examining concepts such as the other, othering, and the foreigner, since she is also a black author. The author, who does not neglect to focus on the problem of racism, draws attention to how a cruel treatment continues through the contrast of black and white by referring to American history. Dealing with the slave-master relationship in the context of the other, Morrison also focuses on the literature while talking about how slaves are marginalized and excluded from society. She questions oversimplified generalizations about blacks and looks for ways to get away from this approach. In this context, she focuses on colour fetishism and deals with the problems that this situation creates in literary works. At the same time, questioning the expectations of the reader from literary works, Morrison brings to light the mistake that the works that are fictionalized for the profile of the reader who is afraid of encountering the other. The Origin of Others, in which the author also criticizes her own works, is an important study that focuses on the perception of black, which is handled shallowly in some literary works, and draws attention to the fact that the other is not far but actually within us.
